I want to take a simpler turn here from the pi/arduino mezz concept
I was just hoping for a simple level shifting mezz with the same LS layout as 96boards and a switch to toggle between 3v3 and 5v like on the audio mezz. Hopefully fitting it in a 96boards IoT Form-factor, so that even the IoT boards can make use of this.

The IoT mezzanine spec uses a .1" header instead of 2mm so we would need two boards.
This reminds me that we need a KiCAD template for the IoT spec mezzanine boards.

But I'd still like to see a simple level shift board, for a project that uses just 1-2 sensors you can get away with an off the shelf 4 channel level shifter for anything more the wiring itself becomes a mess to and from separate level shifting modules
