Notes on macOS ventura build. Patience through rvbuild "failure".

In case this helps anybody, I compiled OpenRV on Ventura 13.4.1 today.

Used this gist (slightly modified) to create a sandboxed homebrew, as I don't want to mess with /usr/local:

Created a venv for the pip stuff to keep it sandboxed as well:

$ python3 -m venv venv
$ source venv/bin/activate
$ python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip

Removed "--user" from the rvsetup alias line in rvcmds.sh since we're using venv.

Add this to the rvcfg alias:
-DCMAKE_CXX_FLAGS=-Wprofile-instr-unprofiled

Something has a hardcoded path to python3.8, and in order to succeed, I needed to symlink my brew's python (3.9) as python3.8.
ln -s python python3.8

$ source rvcmds.sh

rvbootstrap
rvbuild

Initially, without the CXX_FLAGS change, rvbootstrap fails, but continued issuing of rvbuild eventually succeeds. (Hammer)
By suppressing this warning with the CXX_FLAGS, ninja no longer fails. (Scalpel)
I did have to run rvbuild an extra time to complete things after libssl stopped it.

Since the minor changes to rvcmds.sh are more about my setup, I don't think they warrant a pull request.
However, I thought these notes might prove useful to other macOS RV builders.

The result is an intel binary, so it's using Rosetta. I haven't poked around to see about compiling for Apple Silicon.

My default shell is zsh, in that I have already done python alias
alias python='python3'
but running the cmake build command

Most likely the alias for python in your shell isn’t making it to the sub shell that is executing the commands, thus the python not found error. If you can make a symlink from python to python3 you should get over this hurdle.

In case you didn't figure this out:

ln -s /usr/local/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python

You may need to run this in sudo.

I have a similar issue. I followed those hacks (editing the aliases and linked python) but still get:

After you manually compile glew, if you 'rvbuild' again, does it make it past the error?
(I revisited compiling OpenRV yesterday and succeeded on Monterrey. Compiling for Apple Silicon and an upgrade to Qt6 are currently in the works by the OpenRV team. It is known that it does NOT compile on macOS Sonoma.)

No, it does not work with rvbuild. It fails with the same error message /bin/sh: line 0: cd: auto: No such file or directoryalthough the directory exists and GLEW compiled correctly allready.

It is known that it does NOT compile on macOS Sonoma.
