Introducing SRT Publisher

🎉 Introducing SRT Publisher for OvenMediaEngine! 🎉

We are excited to announce that the development of the SRT Publisher is now complete.
While there are still some areas for improvement, the core functionality is ready for use, and we are opening it up to the community.

[Areas for Improvement]

1. Refining the streamid Format
   • The streamid in the SRT provider is currently implemented as a full URL, which often results in excessively long SRT URLs.
   • For the SRT Publisher, we have adopted a more concise and intuitive format: vhost/app/stream.
   • If this approach proves effective, we plan to update the SRT provider to use the same format in the future.
2. Handling Multiple Audio/Video Tracks
   • Currently, when a stream contains multiple audio or video tracks, the first track is selected by default.
   • We are considering ways to allow better track mapping in such cases.
     • For example, LLHLS addresses this by specifying tracks in OutputProfile.Playlist.

1. SRT Publisher works fine with RTMP provider, however using it with SRT provider causes an issue when the original stream contains a DATA track:

In this case, the client connects OK but the stream does not actually play back on the client. OBS seems to include a data track by default and I know many encoders include timecode on the data track, so this will need to be addressed before this can be widely implemented with SRT Provider supported.

2. This could be related to the data track issue but I also noticed that HEVC is excluded in your documentation. However HEVC is fully supported by the SRT provider and SRT push publisher, so it would only make sense that the SRT publisher supports it too.

3. In your example for enabling SRT Publisher, it references <Provider> where I think you meant to reference <Publisher>.

I have just fixed the typo and modified it so that the data channel ignores unsupported bitstreams for now.

Could you let me know how you included the data track in SRT? If I can reproduce the problem, I would like to review whether improvements are possible.

Could it be that the data track did not come from OBS where I ran the test stream, but rather from the Image encode I have defined in my OutputProfiles?

Quick followup - I might be wrong about this clue since the data track also seems to appear when I stream in with RTMP, but then client playback works OK. This issue also occurred when streaming with WHIP. All from OBS with these settings (Except AAC for RTMP):

Thank you for this great feature! I am looking forward to get rid of Pushing streams from Ovenmedia to mediamtx and directly use them in our gstreamer based Playout Solution

One thing i've noticed is that reconnecting to previously removed sources (eg because of power outage, network troubles,... ) or sources that haven't been there on first connect (eg for preparing some client ) sometimes works but most of the time not.

Ovenmedia then complains about Invalid worker id

steps i am able to reproduce the behaviour:
Note that this is not always happening.

• stream to OME with ffmpeg
• open VLC with OME SRT Publisher Url
• stop ffmpeg leave VLC Open
• start streaming with ffmpeg again
• repeat the last steps
• sometimes VLC can reconnect. sometimes not. When it can't reconnect OME prints the errors

it seems OME is trying to reuse a worker that is already cleaned up?

The same behaviour/log messages is happening when i start VLC before starting the stream

i can provide a minimal local Server.xml if it helps but i think it's a very basic config.
i usually use AdmissionWebhook, SrtPush and Recording but disabled it for reproducing.

I just tried to access SRT Publisher on the edge node and noticed a bug/missing feature.
OME Edge is not able to find vhost/app when the first client connecting is a SRT client

[SPSRTPub-s9998:24] SRTPublisher | srt_publisher.cpp:412 | Could not find vhost/app: #default#dev

when fetching the LLHLS playlist for the same stream first, SRT Publisher is working.

when the stream is stopped and deleted from Edge after UnusedStreamDeletionTimeout then SRT Publisher is finding vhost/app on Edge but Stream is not found.

btw do you prefer these findings here or in the issue queue?

This is a feature that is still in development, so it's better to continue discussing it in this thread.

The ability to receive from origin when there is no stream on the local host is not yet implemented in the srt publisher. We'll let you know when it is implemented. @dimiden

Show an example so that a PC with obs connects to Overmedia Via SRT and on another PC receives this flow, because I managed to do it even with the explanations on the site and with the help of AI, it didn't work, it connects to the server but doesn't travel to another PC. Please provide more specific details - when you say "it didn't work" what are you referring to? It sounds like you are able to stream into OME but are having trouble reading the stream via SRT pull into OBS. Be sure to include your Server.xml and examples of the URLs you are using in case there is a syntax issue. Consider using the issue template on this repo to help you gather your materials.
