On tethys.byu.edu today the server failed to restart after an app install. All the potentially useful information i can think of:

  • I attempted to install the jhumapper app v0.0.1
  • the installation progress messages reported to me that it was successfully installed and resolving/updating conda env took just over 2 mins.
  • i came back to the installation page after ~5-10 mins while working on other things and waiting for the conda env to finish resolving.
  • There is 1 custom setting in the app but i skipped configuring it since i didn't have the url handy.
  • The app displayed the message about waiting for the server to restart for installation to take affect.
  • I waited probably another 5 mins before I got concerned that the server hadn't finished coming up.
  • I started looking for my ssh credentials to log on to tethys.byu.edu to see what didn't work.
  • At the same time, @rfun messaged on slack in the #server-managers channel asking if anyone knew what was wrong. He beat me to logging on and turning the server back on but was concerned that the logs didn't show any installation messages.

Potentially related to other problems with that server's config which makes it not restart on its own which Nathan has looked in to before?? see: BYU-Hydroinformatics/ServerIssueTracker#13
