The chains are linear, not nested. Exactly like a GitHub issue, not like reddit. BUT you can link to specific positions higher in the thread, and do @richlitt type tagging of specific people talking in the thread. Kind of like a blog comment thread but done right.

The dash means that they are attached in the sense of immediately accessible from the document. Attached in the sense of not being able to pull them up regardless of context, no.
