viewDOS

Simple shellscript to quickly generate an ordered list of all IPs connected to multiple servers in X ports, showing the amount of connections detailed with geolocation. ViewDOS only shows connections and TCP states, no Bandwidth.

It is intended to quickly get a report of suspicious IP addresses of several clusters under different types of DOS attacks. It just connects by SSH to different servers and uses netstat to obtain the desired information. You can filter by IP, port, number of connections and UDP / TCP state in the header of the script. Adapting the script to use parameters ($1, $2, ...) instead of the header options is easy.

Example

Suppose a particular online service uses a web cluster composed of ten web servers. If the number of connections to port 443 and 80 starts to grow excessively, the cause must be cleared as quickly as possible.

The origin of the problem is not always a DOS attack, the increase of connections can be due to several things. When a worker did not notify that an SEO campaign (use of crawlers) has been contracted. Performance testing, an implementation of a problematic feature. Monitoring applications with badly configured checks, in short, millions of possible causes.

For example, it is necessary to get a list of all IPs connected to certain ports, for the web cluster port 80 and 443. With viewDOS it is very simple and quick to get all the IPs and their number of connections. In addition it shows information like country of origin of the IP, states TCP of the connections, etc.

The script will connect via SSH to the 10 web servers in the cluster, get all the incoming IPs and order them based on their number of connections. The ssh user as the script location must have access to the target servers. Using an SSH key without passphrase to connect is recommended, especially when it comes to many servers.

The script header contains configuration options for execution. The ssh commands required to connect to the servers must also be included in the header of the script. After configuring your script you can run it as follows.

chmod a+x viewDOS.sh
./viewDOS.sh

Dependency (optional but recommended).

Command geoiplookup / [geoip-bin] (http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geoip2/geolite2/ "MaxMind’s GeoIP2 databases.")

# Temporary file name.
file_tmp="/tmp/viewDOS.$(date +%Y_%m_%d-%H_%M_%S).txt"

# Filter IPs using any of the defined tcp/udp ports.
ports=":80 \|:443"

# IPs that will be ignored and will not be counted (whitelist).
# Type "NO_filter" if you do not want to ignore any IP.
ignoreip="127.0.0.1\|localhost"

# Red mark on hosts that have more than X connections.
red=5

# Red mark on hosts that have more than X tcp connections to a particular state.
red_tcp_state=2

# Show only IPs that have more than X connections.
min_conn=0

# Show only IPs that have more than X tcp connections.
min_state_conn=0

# Netstat command and options that will run on the destination hosts to list connections (TCP / UDP / PID).
netstat_cmd="netstat -ptun"

# Command geolocation + options, necessary to display geopositioned data.
geoip_cmd="geoiplookup"

# state TCP connections (FIN_WAIT2, SYN_RECV, UNKNOW, etc.)
tcp_state="SYN_RECV"
# Multiple TCP states example: tcp_state="SYN_RECV\|TIME_WAIT\|CLOSE_WAIT".
# Multiple TCP states with separate output, check line 132.

Add hosts to viewDOS: Edit Hosts section of the script. (Example with four hosts).

ssh [email protected] "$netstat_cmd" >> $file_tmp
ssh -p 222 [email protected] "$netstat_cmd" >> $file_tmp
ssh -i /opt/keys/id_rsa [email protected] "$netstat_cmd" >> $file_tmp
ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" -p 2211 [email protected] "$netstat_cmd" >> $file_tmpmp

NOTE: If we have twenty servers and want to obtain the IPs and number of connections that all the servers receive, it will take twenty ssh commands, one for each server that you want to consult. You can put some of the first ssh commands in the background to speed up the execution of the script.

Sample viewDOS output.
