Right now "H" and "L" are used for syllable weight. They are 3-column-wide cells and are left-aligned so that the letter in question appears above the onset position:

What I propose instead is that we use macrons and breves instead, and place them over the vowel. (This also suggests that they shouldn't be 3 columns wide anymore.) This might look like:

We could alternatively place the breves right on the vowel, but as @jillianchang notes this might be hard to read given all the other stuff that's going on.
