Short description of the idea (140 character tweet):

Pre-K Matters

What is your project concept or idea? What challenge or opportunity will it solve?

An SMS message text once per week to parents of 3-5 year-olds that includes practical and high-quality strategies to help families prepare their young child(ren) for kindergarten.

Who will benefit from your project? Describe the humans at the center of the problem - who are they?

How would they benefit? Can you tell their story?

Do you have photos of them? Or quotes?

This project will help parents/guardians be more aware of issues in early education and how to meet the needs of their young learner.

Issue area(s) relevant to your project idea:

  • Arts & Culture
  • Children & Youth
  • Economic Opportunity & Development
  • Education
  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Food/Hunger
  • Health
  • Housing
  • Mobility/Transportation
  • Neighborhoods
  • Open Government/Transparency
  • Public Safety
  • Other

Children & Youth, Education

What is the current state of your project idea?

  • I have a fuzzy area of opportunity but don’t yet fully understand the challenge
  • I understand the challenge well but don’t yet have ideas for a solution
  • I have an idea or concept of a solution, but have not yet prototyped or tested it
  • I tested a prototype and want to build it

I have an idea or concept of a solution, but have not yet prototyped or tested it.

Tell us more about the current state of your project idea.

Do you have any links to news articles, text, mockups, code, or data?

**I have created a logo and would like to use an existing SMS platform; however I have also been told this could possibly be an app.

Tell us about yourself.

What is your background? Why is this challenge important to you?

Are you representing a group in submitting this project idea?

I worked as a public school educator for 5.5 years. I spent most of those years as a Head Start teacher to 3-5 year olds. I quickly realized that many of my students' parents really wanted to reinforce what their child was learning in school but was unsure how to do that. This challenge is important to me because I want to make learning material more accessible to parents, particularly parents of color and low-income families.

@KHugley do you have a mockup of the landing page? Do you have any ideas about where you would like to keep the subscriber information? What information do you want to collect (e.g. name, phone, etc.)? Do you have a url that you would like to use?

@ryanvgates I'm currently working on a mockup of the landing page. I'll be able to get it to you by next Tuesday, July 3. Where would you like me to email it? Also, I have no idea where I'd like to keep subscriber information. I'd like to collect names and phone numbers.

@KHugley you could email it, but it would probably be better to create a repository and put it there. Are you planning on making this closed or open source? For storage, I was thinking we might just use Google Sheets to start with. I would be interested in learning how to do it.

@ryanvgates I have no idea what closed and open source means, lol. Could you please explain those terms to me? I would have to play with Google Sheets, too.

@KHugley Closed source means that the source code that produces a website or application is not shared publicly and all rights are reserved. Most commercial software falls into this category. Open source means that source code is shared publicly and typically has a license explaining who can use the software and how they can use it. It depends upon what your plans are for Pre-K Matters.

@ryanvgates Thank you for the explanation. I plan on making this closed source.

@KHugley You may want to consider creating a repository in bitbucket. It allows for free private repositories with less than 5 people. Can you send me/share the mockups?

@ryanvgates I emailed the mockup. I will look over bitbucket.

I am interested in contributing to this project as well. Depending on how you host the landing page, you can have subscribers' information stored in a database, and the number of subscribers can be displayed on the landing page itself as an option. Can I receive a copy of the mock-up?

Hi @rachdaup93! Thank you for reaching out. That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out, how to host the landing page. I just emailed you a copy of the mock-up.

@KHugley, because I have experience with it, you can create an account with Heroku which allows you to push web application code into the public with a given URL. The best part is that you can do this for free, but the URL will have a Heroku domain, and your app will "go to sleep" if no one visits it for some time meaning that it just loads slower when it needs to be woken up. If you pay for Heroku, you can get your own domain and your app doesn't go to sleep. You will have access to a database which can help with knowing the number of subscribers.

The set up is pretty technical, so if you don't like the idea of this, I completely understand. There are also other hosting sites, like Squarespace that allows website templating, but I know it cost money monthly.

I have experience with Wix, and I created a website with it. It was pretty easy to build and spin up a simple online store for a friend, but I felt like the pages loaded pretty slow.

@KHugley Hi! What's the status on this project? Do you want me to work on building a basic landing page for a better visual? Let me know!

@KHugley Thank you for following up. I'll highlight the project at the meeting tonight to see if I can match some volunteers to help with the landing page.
