Probably a long shot, I'm not sure how possible this is, but a lasso tool for breaking things up and selecting items that overlap oddly, or have very finicky edges would be an enormous time saver.
This may be very specific to the Bach Project (or similar text/writing focused projects) for the type of needs I'm thinking about- in terms of where there are two overlapping symbols at an odd angle the two x and y splitting options can't separate them very well; it's possible that a 'diagonal split left/right' option would work just as well than a kind of lasso selection where you trace the glyph you want to separate from another glyph.
