According to Achim, one would not show the "SMILES columns" in professionell applications, since most people don't "read" SMILES anyway.
I think for us, this column mostly serves the purpose of spotting aromatic substructures or aromatic fragments (e.g. to explain why a terminal C is CH2 and not CH3). So if we wanted to "hide" it, we would have to think about how to display aromaticity better in the structure depictions.
