Asset Manager - selecting multiple image files?

So the Asset Manager supports uploading multiple files in bulk, but does it support selecting multiple images?
Trying to figure out a way to create a custom component that displays more than one image, and there doesn't seem to be built-in support for either selecting multiple images or a adding repeatable image field.
