Custom scalar values

What is the advised way to use custom scalar values in a Vertex or Edge?
Simple examples:

• an enum (Status, DayOfWeek) that I want to store as a string by name instead of by the underlying int value;
• a Vogen (https://github.com/SteveDunn/Vogen) object with an underlying DateOnly value that I want to store as a string in yyyy-MM-dd format (using it's ToString() method)
