'DirectChat is displaying over other apps' notification even when no chat bubbles are active

I'm getting the 'DirectChat is displaying over other apps' notification even when no chat bubbles are active. I've triggered a test chat and then closed it to ensure there are no bubbles hidden there, but even after that the notification remains. This means I cant use certain apps because they don't allow input when something is displaying over them and so have to turn if the functionality of directchat. I'm using a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro. Please advise.
