Right now the docker doesn't have any tools for reading in medical image data formats like DICOM. As this is a critical aspect for making a good toolchain and is something we want to standardize as much as possible these should be part of the base image.

as a response to (ImagingInformatics#1)
adding the newest version of the pydicom library(1.0 build, not on pip) for handing single images and their metadata. 
adding SimpleITK for handling 3D/4D image data from DICOM/mhd files
adding nibabel for handling various neuroformats like Nifti
