What are you trying to do, and what do you expect to happen?

Model was supposed to have visible bones

What happens instead?

Bones are not visible in pose mode or object mode tho are visible in edit mode also it only happens with some of the models and I can't figure out what's different between them. For example this replica of the naga model has this issue

but this model I made doesn't have the issue

Its seems that the bones are correct, they are just showing a visual sphere instead of the huge octahedral bone you are used to.

for example:

In Obj Mode:

In Edit Mode:

Those are called Bone Shapes. Try toggling Bone Shapes in the Armature Options. Or, you can instead use 'In Front' to show the Bones in front of the geometry.
