Would be beneficial to have a CI tool build the code on commits, something like Travis CI, etc.

Matt might have better recommendations or alternatives.

This would be a good question for the community. What tool should we use? Is this the right approach?

Have a talk with Apereo Sakai OAE's Lead, nicolaasmatthijs, Seems they are on Travis.
My POV don't go there to quickly.
Let's stabilize the stack first.

I have worked with Jenkins CI on several past projects. I have not worked with Travis CI, but I really like Jenkins. Very easy to use. http://jenkins-ci.org/

@edalquist or @apetro, do you have admin access to this repo?

I suggest Travis. Travis is hosted SaaS at no charge to open source software projects like this one. It requires less investment of Apereo volunteer effort on hosting it and keeping it running, with the effort boiled down to creating and maintaining the .travis.yml build recipe. Jenkins affords more control and power at the cost of having to apply Apereo efforts to hosting and maintaining the continuous integration server infrastructure, which imho is to be avoided. So, my advice is, find a way for Travis to be good enough.

@mmoayyed I lack admin access to this repo. I think you need someone from this team: https://github.com/orgs/Jasig/teams/owners ; I relied upon @holdorph to push the buttons when activating the uPortal repo Travis integration.
