I think there are some features that would make more sense to implement as lab extensions than via widgets, such as embedding a markdown cell in a GUI.

We should think about how we might want to transition to or incorporate JupyterLab into the project.

Another example: With JupyterLab, we could have a workflow step which launches both a notebook and a console in a particular predefined layout. It would generally provide more flexibility in terms of nonlinear UI elements.

This direction, of course, makes more sense to pursue once some dust settles on the JupyterLab side, perhaps after 1.0.
