Question about private or public subnet

Hi! I wondered if it is a requirement to have the nodes in a public subnet?
I might be wrong, but I've understood that there will be no traffic possible if an EIP is attached to an interface in a private subnet?

If you're associating an Elastic IP address with your instance to enable communication with the internet, you must also ensure that your instance is in a public subnet.
