Problem

Writing books in-game is a nice feature. However, reading them is a nightmare. White text on a white background is not improved by inverting screen colors. The text is incredibly difficult to read especially in its small size.

Solutions

Just like wooden signs, books should be able to have their font color changed. The font face itself is better in books than on signs, as it supports more international characters; however, that advantage is rendered pointless when the coloration makes it invisible.

Alternatives

If pinpointing the color of the font in books is impossible (I tried to, myself, to no avail), then another solution might be to give users the option to change the page coloration. This way, the font itself doesn't need to be addressed at all, since it is already white with a black shadow.
Another alternative might be to add an option to the Settings tab that would give users the option of changing the color of text.
If none of these solutions are viable, at least change the body section to have a gray background similar to the title box.

Additional context

It seems the font that appears in books is the same as the font that appears in menus, such as the chat log/console and in-game buttons and windows.

Therefore, adding a setting to change this universally per user might also be an option to consider.
