Using the stock firmware I'm able to create a hotspot, which fails with the Debian-provided firmware. Need to copy out the error message...

What do you consider the 'stock firmware'? ap6256? That's indeed not available in Debian.

I found https://gitlab.com/greysector/rpms/ap6256-firmware/-/blob/master/ap6256-firmware.spec but I HIGHLY doubt the 'license' is correct, I haven't found a source for it. License: Redistributable, no modification permitted

And that really must be clarified before it has a chance of being added to Debian. I also found https://forum.radxa.com/t/ap6256-firmware-should-be-submitted-to-linux-firmware/3275 with which I completely agree, but that has been no follow-up. Note that the Quartz64 devices need that firmware (too).
