Issue/Proto3 Style

Describe the bug
We could consider using the standard proto3 style according to: https://developers.google.com/protocol-buffers/docs/style

The tradeoffs are essentially that we abstract the event based nature of the application away from the user and make our proto files more easily understood by those used to using proto definitions. The downside is the obvious time to make the change, as well as the fact that as a cd tool abstracting away the nature of the system may or may not be desirable.
