MAIL_URL via docker-compose not working

I have a docker-compose that I have used for about 5 years (updated regularly). However, recently my forgot email (and all other email) stopped working. I've tried everything from validating my gmail smtp settings and doing test emails with other tools to trying to configure smtp manually in the config page of my server. Nothing works. The config page is blank (not populating like it used to from mail_url) and if I manually set it up it tells me that my mail_url is not defined. It is defined and I confirmed the env var is making it to the container itself by printenv. Anyone else using gmail smtp with MAIL_URL via docker-compose having trouble? I had it briefly work on 6.8 but 6.9 and 6.9.1 both completely fail to recognize the mail_url env var. Thanks in advance!
