How It went Down by Kekla Magoon is a powerful and thought-provoking book that focuses on issues of racial bias and violence. I liked this book because of the way the story is narrated through every character's perspective, and the way there is a bit of mystery.

How It Went Down is a young adult fiction novel set in an urban neighbourhood that deals with the aftermath of the shooting of a black teenager, Tariq Johnson, by a white man. The story starts off with the shooting and then unfolds through the perspectives of the different characters, each with their own views on the incident. The novel explores the theme of racial issues and the consequences. The novel leaves you to ponder about many issues discussed in the book, and shines some light on racial bias and violence. How It Went Down is an intriguing book that is a must-read for people interested in learning how violence affects communities.

In the novel, the author narrates the story through every single character’s perspective, which is something i like very much. Each chapter is dedicated to a character, providing multiple viewpoints on the shooting, how they are impacted, and it also allows knowing about their experiences. Through this complex weaving of perspectives, we can understand how this community is really impacted by the shooting. Magoon’s use of multiple perspectives creates a rich understanding of the narrative that draws the reader into the novel.

The element of mystery is implemented in the novel by leaving many questions unanswered, which left me on the edge, waiting for what would happen next. For example, during the incident, an unknown man shoots Tariq, leaving us wondering who was the shooter, and also the motive behind the shooting. The author, using multiple perspectives, reveals to us the answers to these questions. Overall, these elements of mystery are expertly intertwined into the plot, making How It Went Down a suspenseful story.

In the end, How It Went Down by Kekla Magoon is an exceptional novel that uses multiple perspectives to show us all sides of the story. It also uses the element of suspense to engage readers as they attempt to figure out what the truth behind the shooting is. I would give this book a 9/10 for the reasons stated above, and would highly recommend it. In general, this novel is significant and impactful as it delves into pressing topics and prompts readers to think deeply about how the book relates racial bias and violence from the book to the real world.
