Matias Goldman made the following illustrated proposal for improving the current edit template:

edittemplate3

We discussed the proposal during the TiddlyWiki Hangout #40:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FDV5ojcCLB8#t=135

Matias gave me the following comments after the hangout:

The idea is that over whichever element or feature that you hover, the questionmark becomes visible. Then click opens popup. I.e it is not a general help popup but specific for each element we consider relevant. And these discrete questionmarks could be used anywhere in TW for access to help - in the sidebar lists, controlpanel, etc...
If "on blur" is not sufficiently intuitive, then perhaps finishingi off with Enter is sufficient - if the initial text in the field box reads "Add tag + press Enter" and "Add field + press Enter". Anyway, the goal is to avoid visual clutter so maybe there are more alternatives. But in case buttons and stuff are needed then at least they can be "visible only when hover" things.
Not brought up in the drawing but I'm thinking maybe the "Show preview" button could be an icon instead, or just an embedded and much more discrete image. Possibly even mirroring the size of the tags thingy for symmetry.

Hi guys, these are great improvements to the edittemplate. I like all of the changes, though I am not clear how the fields get deleted 'manually' if there is no trash can or similar button to delete them. You guys probably mentioned that point verbally in the hangout.

I am not sure why this is seen as addressing my issue #412. The image above says "Current behavior for existing tags is kept" and shows the current dropdown of existing tags, as if approving of it.

Issue #412 is requesting changes in the behavior and appearance of the dropdown of existing tags in edittemplate, and also includes a request for a tag filtering search in $:/AdvancedSearch. None of the changes in this issue addresses the requests I made in issue #412.

Just creating the annotations for ho#40 (I actually missed it).

I'd like to bump this issue. ...
Not all of the discussed improvements can be done.
But I think the general layout ... input field positions could be done

@Jermolene what do you think?

Yes, I'd like to do get this done. I'll add it to my list :)

Great propositions Matias!

👍 For modifying the tags system and for the idea of the color palette!
👍 Questionmarks and help links in general would be a plus
👍 Symetry is not mandatory but would also be a plus
👍 The preview button does not annoy me the way it is but if you really want to replace it perhaps with a "eye" icon ? This would allow to keep the button as small as possible.

👎 For the trashcan i'm in favor of leaving it, we can change the icon however, but it is surely easier to press a button to empty a field rather than selecting everything inside and pressing a keyboard touch to achieve the same goal (remember we are lazy ;-)

Giffmex is right: even though relevant, the issue #412 is not related and the link to it should therefore be removed from this issue.

One thing I would like to add here is changing how the preview pane works. On a narrow monitor it's mostly useless. Maybe making it a mode you switch to (Github style) or having it open below would be better.
