Describe the bug
When I click the send arrow on the message screen, it shows a pop-up saying: Failed to send the message. Perhaps your internet went down? Please try again.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to someone's profile
  2. Click on "Send a message", eg https://www.trustroots.org/messages/-velaia-
  3. Type something in the bottom input
  4. Click on the "send" button
  5. See error in a pop-up

Expected behavior
I expected a "sent" message.

Screenshots
It's a javascript alert with that message

This is on the live site, or are you running the site locally?

I've just tried posting a message to an existing conversation and it worked fine. But I also see a drop in messages on the stats dashboard in this week. I don't see any support requests talking about problems sending messages though.

Not sure why the weekly messages chart shows a drop, but the daily messages chart looks solid. So I'm guessing this is either a local issue for @trentlarson or an isolated issue affecting only a small number of users on the live site. I will stop considering this a high priority issue now, but if that seems like an error, please post a reply here or message me on another channel and I can investigate further.

Reporting from the "other side" of the conversation with @trentlarson : I had sent a message and it also doesn't show up under my messages. 🤔 Maybe because I sent the message as part of the "Add friend" process from @trentlarson 's profile?

This is on the live site.

I am able to send messages to other people.

Here's a difference between this message screen and my message screen with a successful contact: these buttons show above the text box.

I get this on Chrome as well as Firefox.

I've logged out and in again to no avail. I'll reboot at some point and try then.

It seems like it's an isolated issue somehow related to your profiles. Can you share a screen recording of the process and the error?

This is the process (Adding contact) from my side. I'm also able to send messages to other members.

@velaia I don't see an error in your screen recording. It looks like it worked successfully. Or did I miss something?

@chmac Yes, my side of the communication seems alright, no errors.

Just realising I dropped the ball on following up on this.

Our statistics page shows quite a lot of messages, and no obvious drop, so it seems like this is an isolated issue. Could it be related to an adblocker or similar @trentlarson? Does the issue still happen? Does the developer console shed any light on what the problem could be?

OK, I figured a way to send to this person. It's still odd behavior:

"empty-profile"
limit	140
message	"Please write longer profile description before you send messages."
  • I looked at my profile and the "Describe Yourself" section had the following: "father & husband, programmer, cryptocurrency enthusiast, voluntaryist & anarchist, sustainable-living helper, snowboarder & wakeboarder"

  • I then copied that description and pasted again 3 more times so that it is longer, and then I was able to send a message.

  • That's especially weird because I was able to send a message to Kasper 5 months ago... so some recipients work but some do not with a shorter description. 🤷

Maybe we simply recommend that the error message be propagated to the user. But I'm willing to close this issue if you like.

BTW, I also see this in the console, but it must not be related because I still get it. Let me know if you'd like me to file another bug for it.

Interesting. Maybe there's some weird issue around the profile length. Hopefully this doesn't affect enough people to be a major blocker, so I'll close the issue for now.
