You have two modes for drawing. The first is on the surface of a 3d object and the second is on the surface of a 2d plane in the 3d space. But I am proposing a third mode.
In it, you provide a tool that enables the user to place a series of semi transparent and very small spheres that act as a drawing guide . The user then uses the hpaint pen tool to draw a stroke or a curve along these spheres . The small spheres would then disappear and become the control points for these strokes for further modification . In other words, the spherical vertices plot the curve path in advance. Even grease pencil does not have these features. The resulting sketch would be very three dimensional and useful as a guide for 3d modeling, instead of importing 2d sketches from external apps. The following are extracts from youtube showing how the 3d sketches would look like
Usually to achieve these sketches you have to draw the curves over an already existing 3d models, but my method would allow for the creation of such sketches without relying on models. To color the in-between, you will have to add a tool that patches these curves .
Also there is an app called feather 3d. It may be interesting but it uses a bad method for drawing guides . My proposed method is way better.
