Argocd backward traceability to git source file

I inherited a complex Argocd environment. A mojor issue for me is that there is no traceability from Argocd back to the source that created the entry. All comments are removed from the argocd manifests so I can't add a comment with the source. Is there a manifest keyword I can use (like label or annotation) that will appear on the Argocd desired manifest but not interfere with Argocd's live manifest?
