Look at OMOP, see if they have any ideas I can use here.

OMOP has some interesting stuff here https://www.ohdsi.org/methods-library/

I don't think it will work with i2b2, but at a higher level they might have solved some problems in a manner that is transferable to i2b2. When time permits I should look over their packages.
