What should I do if I receive "permission denied" warning?

I was using scc on usr/src, but permission denied. :(

In addition to what @cycle20 suggested, do other command line tools work? For instance does the following grep -r test . or do you get errors there as well?

It its down to permissions from the OS there is little the tool can do other than inform you which seems to be the case. Using sudo can help overcome this, but otherwise...
