GPL licence

Currently the majority of the x4i code is distributed under the GPL licence, automatically imposing the same licence on derived work.
Is this still the intention of the x4i project or would it be possible to update the licence to a more liberal LGPL or MIT style licence?

When the project was initiated at LLNL around 2010, there were not a lot of open source options available at LLNL. The situation is very different now, so it is possible to change the license. It would be a very low priority item unless there was a clear need.
