Sometimes, when opening the app, the screen is black

From an error report: "it often fails, as in a black screen comes up for a while and then a gray error box appears". This is likely on a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone (Android).

I haven't seen or heard of this happening on an iPhone or on the web version of the app. Initial guess is that we need to upgrade Cordova to a more recent version to see if it resolves the problem.
