Sometimes, I read messages, but I would like to come back to them later (when I have more time for instance)

I would like to be able to mark messages as unread.

An option "Remind me this message" could also work.
Or at least "Marking channel unread"

It's more marking the room unread, no? It might make sense to "todo" flag specific messages and mark this in the interface somehow, maybe different from unread

Marking unread messages could help to identify the "starting point" of unread messages (for instance, if there is +100 unread message in a room, I can read some, and mark the rest of it as "unread" to catch up on it later)
But, yes, marking the room unread would be at least a first step.

I'm open to working on this feature. It looks like the Matrix protocol has a standard for marking rooms as unread: https://spec.matrix.org/v1.17/client-server-api/#unread-markers

I haven't seen anything in the protocol about marking specific messages as unread in a room, though I agree that that interaction would be useful as well.

I think rooms would already be useful. You could always maintain some XML ToDo list in the room topic, but that'd maybe require discussion with the matrix people and other clients.

@burdges I was thinking about something similar - essentially a third read marker as a cinny.in-namespaced value in the room account data, like "cinny.in.unread_start": <event ID or null>. The Matrix-standard m.marked_unread is already purely client-side, so there wouldn't be much harm in adding a more detailed value for Cinny users that's kept in sync with the standard m.marked_unread flag.

I published a PR #2635 that adds marking rooms as unread. I think it'd be better to tackle marking individual messages as unread in a separate PR with more discussion, since that would require Cinny-specific data outside of the Matrix spec.
