404 error with rewrite-based animals

Sorry a newbie issue here.

I'm using the rewrite method for the animals. While I visit the animals, there is 404 error. How can I trouble shoot?

Farmer host name is set correctly. Animal url is correct.

There is a `.htaccess` in the farmer folder, but none in the animal folders. Is this the cause?
