You need to have Quake 2 files in the baseq2 folder or it will not run. Please read the place_pak_files_here.txt for details.

By the way, you can get a copy of the "Quake 2 demo" data files in Internet Archive.

Demo version doesn't seem to be in Steam anymore (https://store.steampowered.com/app/9130/). The link redirects to paid full version (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2320/QUAKE_II/).
