Is it possible to group blog pages by relative date?

I like how the relative date looks in the blog layout and would like to use it in the blog-start layout as well.

There, however, I group the posts by day and output the date with htmlspecialchars($day). Unfortunately, I don't think I can use page->getDateRelative() at this point.

I am now looking for a simple work-around to display the relative date in the blog-start layout as well.
