Source code is more complicated than it needs to be

The current source code was derived from a template and built up in a hurry by someone with limited understanding of Electron, namely, er, me. There are whole swathes of boilerplate that I don't know how to maintain and fear to touch, not to mention some frustratingly brittle Node and TS dependencies.

Now that I know more about Electron I am pretty sure we could make this a lot simpler, which will be important as people generate installers and tailor them to the needs of particular bundles. This is a tracking issue for thoughts on how to do this.
