Add a long term trend plot in the background. Not necessarily a time plot. Probably a overall memory consumption trend or slope.

Perhaps an artificial-horizon memory rising/sinking slope:

height = % consumed
level line = static consumption
rising to right = increasing
decreasing to right = decreasing
would probably need smoothing

Perhaps a curving line - long term smoothed, near term not so smoothed.

Perhaps stacked lines with one for buff/cache.
