Need for return code to indicate pass/fail

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. diff 2 identical files
2. diff 2 different files

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There is nothing to indicate when a diff has no differences. I would expect
some kind of return code to indicate this.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
v1.0, Ubuntu 9.04
