I found this bug report in a forum that says clipboard-sync is causing issues with KDE.

as the title says I am unable to log out of my user.

Clicking log off after pressing ctrl+alt+delete or the arrow button in the start menu brings a prompt asking if I want to log out.

If I hit yes nothing happens

haven’t been able to find anything about this in the kde bug tracker.

I also tried resseting my sddm settings to default with no luck

EDIT: created a new user and rebooted to I can get to the login screen and log into that user and was able to log out from that user. that led me to stoping every user systems service I have on my main user and found it it was because of this GitHub - dnut/clipboard-sync: Synchronizes the clipboard across multiple X11 and wayland instances running on the same machine.

apparently, from some reason this prevents plasma from logging out

... and they replied the next day:

This doesn’t seem necessary anymore. I used it to work around copy-and-paste not working correctly on the Rustdesktop remote controller computer and the host. I haven’t tested it, but it seems this should no longer be needed.

Sorry for not marking the issue resolved. I wanted to confirm this, but I haven’t had the time. Anyway, this was causing Plasma not to log out, and since I don’t really use this anymore (and it has other bugs), I just gutted it.

If anyone else can’t log out of plasma starting around plasma 6, now you know what may potentially be the culprit.
