I have the same Linux partition bootable both in VMware Fusion and natively (AMD graphics). When running the VM, kmscon seems to use the first mode it sees, which is a tiny 640x480.
I hacked up the source to use the last mode found, and now it uses the proper resolution in the VM, but in exchange, native boot now uses 640x480 (or some other such low resolution).
I may be missing something, but I don't currently see a way to manually specify what resolution to use.
