When defining a complex Flowchart Workflow (Programmatically) the auto layout Button in the Definition View of the workflow, helps to view the flowchart in detail.
When the defined workflow started (Instance View), there is no auto layout button and you don't see visually at which step the workflow is currently e.g. suspended. All Flowchart Steps are stacked and you cannot recognize anything.
