how to properly assign icons?

i often get warnings about inability of assigning icons and the windows like overview and audio panel in sideright ahow a blank icon (placeholder).
example:

apps source:
"telegram desktop": telegram-desktop-bin (aur) (happens in repo's too)
"spotify": spotify-launcher (repo)
"speech-dispatcher-dummy": idk

I am new here so i dont know much but I think its because the icon is not valid in the icon theme or you have provided a wrong file path

does creating a .desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications/ and setting the icon there work?

guessing icon name from window class is hard
i could just make those logs shut up if you don't like it, but idk if there's a perfect way to solve it
