Issues getting home assistant switch state

I've encountered an issue with getting the state of a switch imported from home assistant and I have no idea why as I've got lights working just fine.
Whenever I try to print the state in the log to view what it currently is it causes my esp32 device to crash, I've set up a binary sensor in HA to track the switch state too but it has the same issue. When I explicitly use to_string() on the state it does not crash but it prints out junk, although it is the same for the binary sensor and plain sensor.

I've cut out a lot of the code but here is what should be relevant:

You're trying to print a boolean value as a string.
You could use ONOFF(id(KitchenOutlet).state)

Thank you! Where can I find info on the ONOFF() method? I can't seem to find anything about it in the docs for esphome (other than some source cpp files)

I have also found that I had had the original sensors under just Sensor instead of Text Sensor which really did not help either.
