last year we had a user who (I think) copy-pasted their nickname, including some accidental whitespace, and the error report we got was

can't enter my nickname, field is always blank
can't submit registration (because the backend rejects content that includes newlines)

We should trim whitespace and especially newlines in the one-line text fields.
