I think what's happening is you're using 32 bit Python on Windows, which is not supported. You can check if you're using 32bit Python using the method documented here, and if you are using 32bit Python you can install 64bit Python and use that instead.

Hi @adrianeboyd, On the PyPI page I see that under "Programming Languages" it supports till python 3.8. I think this is the issue. Since my old code was using python 3.8 and it was working fine on it. Thanks for your help. I will check which upgraded version of spacy 2 does python 3.10 support.

There is not a spacy v2 release from after the release of python 3.10. It may work fine, but you'll need a compiler because there aren't prebuilt wheels and we haven't tested it.

Downgrading python will be much easier.

Thank you this was very helpful. I installed the spacy 3 version on python 3.10 and it worked fine. But I have a few concerns about this.

1. When I checked the PyPI documentation for spacy 3 latest version it was showing till python 3.9 version under Programming languages. I ignored this and went on with the installation and fortunately it worked fine. Is the documentation not updated yet to include python 3.10 in programming languages ?

2. On the same Pypi page for spacy==2.2.4 under Install SpaCy part its showing requirement as Python 2.7, 3.5+ (only 64 bit), which is kind of misleading as to for which last version it works (because spacy==2.2.4 was not working for python 3.10). Am i missing something here ?

• Python 3.10 is actually in the list, but not where you would expect it because PyPI orders the list alphabetically rather than numerically (I didn't see this immediately either :-) )

• The spaCy==2.2.4 documentation was correct at the time the package was released, but has become incorrect in the meantime as further Python 3 versions were released that the spaCy version does not support. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about this as it is not permitted to alter a released PyPI package in any way whatsoever, and that includes the documentation.

So you can see where to look it up, the lists of python minor versions on the pypi page (coming from the package classifiers) should be accurate in terms of what is supported and tested for a particular spacy release. For v2.2.4 it looks like this:

Some of the problems relate to cython and if you compile and install from the github repo instead of the pypi sdist (so you generate new code with cython), you can still get older versions of spacy to work with newer versions of python. But as Richard said, we're not allowed to modify the existing packages published on pypi in any way, so the direct pip install spacy==2.2.4 doesn't work with newer versions of python.
