10 foot measurement is wrong

The 10 feet distance appear to be calculated along the center of the track instead of as distance between blockers. This leads to blockers being in play when they are not and vice versa. This is most obvious in the turns.

you are correct that the distances are measured wrong in turns. The correct method is the box method: two skaters are within proximity if they fit within a 10-foot-wide box parallel to the inside boundary, depth being irrelevant. This is not implemented yet, I want to do it one day but it will take some effort and I have not found the time to do it yet.

However careful to not mix up "in play" and "in the pack". Additionally, your first example is incorrect. In your first example purple 3 is indeed part of the pack, since the "hips" (circle centre) of yellow 3 and purple 3 fit in such a 10-foot-wide box, see first picture:

In your second example, purple 3 should indeed be part of the pack. However you mention that purple 3 is considered out of play by the app, which is incorrect: it is considered in play and (wrongly) not in the pack.

sorry, i wrote "in play" when i meant in the pack, i'm aware of the difference. the rules only state

Distances for determining the Pack and the Engagement Zone are measured as the shortest distance, parallel to the inside track boundary, between Skaters’ hips.

and the casebook does not mention said method.

The part of the rules that you quote describes the box method. The rules are not written by mathematicians so the description is ambiguous, but the box method is the way to measure distances in turns. Feel free to ask the wftda rules committee about this.
