It'd be good to build this app from source rather than download binaries.

I've tried to build this Java app once but I gave up.
It'd be cool if someone with a background in Java can make it build.

Not java fluent either, but I found https://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/DevelopersGuide/CreateBuild
I don't know though it the page is up-to-date.
There is this sentence also which not encouranging

The scripts to create an "official" JOSM build (i.e. one of the builds published on https://josm.openstreetmap.de as tested or latest) are not publicly available. Please get in touch with current maintainer if you need more information.
