The tree-view is ok - but the small cover icons lets this view down from a visual point-of-view.
Thus - lets look at replacing the tree-view with two grid views.
Initial view - very large Artist icons in grid view. Track pane collapsed but like now can open and drag and drop covers.
Single click of an Artist icon switches the grid view to a split view.
Top part - large icon - and towards the right side text with the artist name, count of the number of albums and a year range - earliest album to the latest icon.
On the same right-hand-side have navigation button to allow scroll to previous and next icon. An Up-arrow button will be available to switch back to the artist grid.
Bottom part of the window is a standard coverart grid view showing just the albums of the artist. This should be independently sized - default is large cover icons because there would be (on average) just a few albums for an artist.

ok - artist icon view looks ok - probably should make tiles default to circles.
when clicking on an artist - hide artist icon view and replace with something like this
i.e.artist name centered at bottom and option to play all albums - probably should have "back button" on left hand side of artist name to switch back to all artists
lets looks at making the image a background to the window - thus could then scroll down to list individual albums in an icon view below the artist name...
