I read a comment somewhere that this extension was discontinued and now built in to Chrome/Chromium. Based on your response, I guess that is not the case?

That is not strictly accurate to my knowledge. There are other things out there which can perform similar functionality. Though I am unaware of any such product or feature which is built into Chrome.

Looks like it's now been disabled, and users are getting prompted to remove it.

I got that too, and I nearly did. Byt ~5-7 clicks later I was able to reactivate it again.
