Can template variables be used in YAML in the File content template?

I have been using this plugin without any issues, but I decided I want to use YAML front matter in a File content template and I don't really need the inline Metadata section or much other frontmatter (because I get a lot of that from another plugin). I am syncing via Amazon. I have tried a few variations. Here is one:

---
{% if appLink %} kindle-link: [Kindle link]({{appLink}}){% endif %}
---

# {{title}}

## Highlights
{{highlights}}

I get a countup of

?? books could not be synced due to error(s)

Then nothing syncs in this case.
Let me try this:

---
testYaml: hello
---

# {{title}}

## Highlights
{{highlights}}

OK, so this actually works.

So is the problem that I can't use the template variables in YAML, or is my syntax off?

I just made a link in the body of the note as a workaround, which I like better anyway. Thanks for the awesome plug-in!
